The Age of Fire Begins

I’m pleased to announce a the public release of a RCRDSHP feature that has been months in the making. As of today we’re giving you the ability to burn collectibles to liberate their coin value. This is the first step towards having useful in-game currency (coins) and towards being able to craft new collectibles from old ones.

The accumulation of coins will figure prominently in significant upcoming challenges featuring valuable prizes.

Burning functionality is available to holders of collectibles with fire capabilities. At the time of this writing, there are exactly three collectibles with that functionality and they are detailed in this blog post.

GENESIS Lighter

The original and arguably the best. Capable of 60 burns and refillable. Refilling utillity is not currently available but will be possible as soon as crafting functionality drops and will cost a +1 card. (Expected in early December 2021)

Haglof Lighter

High-capacity fire artifact capable of 120 burns, but not refillable.

Lara Matchbook

Basic fire artifact capable of 12 burns, and not refillable. Why twelve instead of twenty, the usual amount of matches in a matchbook? Because you never get to use all the matches in a matchbook, there’s always some that blow out immediately.

IMPORTANT: Because burning is such a fundamental mechanic in the game, matchbook artifacts with the same functionality can and will be released again in the future, and probably will be included in all starter packs in 2022. PRICE ACCORDINGLY!!!

How to Burn

To burn, just equip one of the above-mentioned fire collectibles in your hand. Then visit the details page for one of your collectibles and you’ll see a fire icon below the card. A capacity indicator is shown next to the fire icon, indicating how many burns remain.

Click and hold the fire icon to burn the card. Watch it “get white hot” and then combust. We give you a couple seconds to change your mind — just let go of the button and the collectible will cool off.

Burning is permanent and irreversible. Be careful and don’t risk playing with fire on collectibles that you don’t want to lose!

Until we add support for multiple burning artifacts in your hand, we suggest only equipping one at a time.

Lighters and matchbooks that are “out of fuel” will no longer work. The number of uses remaining on a burn artifact will be displayed in that items description in the marketplace. Buyer beware: Some players may try to sell Haglof Lighters and Matchbooks with no uses remaining.

One final note: if your fire icon is grayed out on a particular card, it means that the blockchain has not been synced with that collectible yet. (You won’t be able to list it for sale either.) Give it a few minutes and try again.

Why do we like burning?

Much like forest fires are healthy for their environment, we see burning as a vital part of controlling supply and demand in our marketplace. The burning of excess inventory into coins that are useful for creating new user-generated collectibles and buying non-music-related in-game items helps to prevent oversupply and overabundance of low value items listed for sale in the marketplace. Our content partners appreciate how the burning of their collectibles increases the scarcity and value of remaining items, and clears the way for dropping new collectibles without depressing the value of old ones.

Will some players overuse burning and regret it? Probably. Will some players experiment with strategies that involve burning and cornering the market on certain collectibles? Undoubtedly. Rather than being scared of these outcomes, we consider it part of the fun of the game, and part of what makes RCRDSHP so innovative.
